'All My Children' Relocating To Los Angeles

ABC Daytime has announced today that All My Children is moving production from New York City to Los Angeles in an effort to cut production costs and capitalize on set space.  In a related move, One Life to Live is set to inherit the current All My Children studio in New York.  The new AMC set will be twice as large as the current one and it will include two stages, allowing for more permanent sets.  OLTL will gain an additional 30% of studio space with the move.  This added space will allow for both shows to follow General Hospital’s lead and upgrade to high-definition upon the move.  AMC will go dark sometime in December to allow for the move and will resume taping episodes in Los Angeles on January 4, 2010.  This will set up the debut of AMC in HD just in time for February sweeps.  OLTL will make its move after AMC’s west coast relocation."

All My Children is one of the most recognizable brands in television, and we are committed to continue telling and enhancing the stories of the residents of Pine Valley," said Brian Frons, president of the Daytime division of the Disney/ABC Television Group in today’s press release. "The move to Los Angeles enables both All My Children and One Life to Live to dramatically improve the series production models and achieve significant efficiencies while enhancing each show. We had to examine every option on the table to combat the current economic realities, and rising costs of production, and we are doing it in a way that makes each of our shows stronger.”  All My Children is the most Emmy nominated daytime drama this year, and One Life to Live held that title last year.

The story, which was broken last week by Daytime Confidential’s Jamey Giddens, was shot down by the network immediately.  Even former star Eden Riegel (ex-Bianca, AMC) had tweeted last week on her personal Twitter that she was “hoping these rumors about AMC moving to LA are true. I always say the only thing that would improve LA would be the company of my AMC pals!”  The actors were told that the move wasn’t happening after Daytime Confidential broke the story.  Today, Frons broke the news to the cast and crew of AMC onset that the show is moving out west.  Actress Chrishell Stause (Amanda, AMC) tweeted early this evening “They just confirmed AMC is moving to LA-private cast meeting starting now.”

It’ll be interesting to see which AMC actors will be willing to make the move.  Many live in the tri-state area surrounding New York City and commute to work each day.  Many have children in schools they may not want to move.  It’s no secret that AMC has an older cast.  Will those that have called New York City home for decades and raised their families there want to make the move?  Thorsten Kaye (Zach, AMC) and partner Susan Haskell (Marty, OLTL) will face a very difficult task…which one will be forced to quit their job?  Or will they make the tough choice to have a bicoastal relationship raising their two children?  Apart from the actors, the move will also impact the crew of All My Children.  Surely, many of them will be losing their jobs, as it’s much easier for AMC to hire new hair and makeup artists (especially those in L.A. already experienced with the art of doing makeup for unforgiving HD cameras) rather than relocate their existing employees.

With the cancellation of the longrunning CBS sudser Guiding Light and the threat of eminent cancellation for As the World Turns, which are both New York based, there’s already going to be a rather large influx of unemployed actors and crewmembers in the East coast soap world.  Can the AMC cast afford to turn their noses up at this move?

While the genre is still alive and breathing they should be milking it for all its worth, because it won’t be long before the well dries up and daytime is dead.  It is bold moves like this that are keeping cost down and keeping daytime alive to suds it up another day.  All My Children and One Life to Live, you just got your reprieve.

Adam Chandler is the Man you love to hate, a terrific Actor, Please offer him the moon to go to LA along with Zack and Kendall, Get rid of Annie Please, long time over her, I agree Greenlee is one of the very best re-additions, thank you..please mate her with someone other than Ryan, even if it is David I agree with above person that said Susan Lucci is a bad actress, I have no idea how she has held onto this one job so long, pretty yes,act no!I did like Bianca hope she can fly in sometimes, the best all my children shows were when All the girls killed by the satin slayer at Fusion were on the set, killing them off killed some of the very best actresses, I hope someone in charge really reads this stuff we fans write I have watched since 1980 along with tons of folks including men.
Please heed your viewers. THINK ZACK, THINK ADAM,THINK GREENLEE,THINK KENDALL and thes slain Fusion girls.

Wasn't acting on a soap just a step on the ladder to prime time TV and feature films. Well, now the struggle just got easier because you're all in the same town...major advantage...and you don't freeze in the winter..that's nice.

I LOVE AMC. Love that Greenlee is back but dont want her with ryan. She deserves SO much better. Susan Lucci is a HORRIBLE actress. I ff through all of her scenes, but that will stop when Greenlee gets back to PV. Scott, ick. Sad Adam is leaving but totally understand. They need some new hunks! Please bring back Zack, I was just starting to like Kendall too. Love Kendall and Greens together. Dont bring back Bianca please. We dont need to have lesbians on EVERY show. Bring back Adian, that accent is hot, so is he. It doesnt matter to me where they tape as long as they are on my TV!!!!! Its better then them not able to keep the show going because of finances.

This is to "Bring Back Leo". Ummmmm...."Leo Du Pres" or better known as JOSH DUHAMMEL moved on years ago. You must not turn on Prime Time TV...or go to the movies. He starred in Las Vegas...a fabulous series that ran for a few years on NBC. He has been in movies...in fact, he has another one that will be released soon. It's too bad you have missed this hottie all these years. I suggest you google his name & track him down...cause he's not coming back to daytime anytime soon! He is also married to Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie.

Writing
Sometimes you really have to wonder who the writers are writing for. Many times it seems not to be for the fans. Beloved characters are unceremoniously dumped killed off and often the story line doesn't make sense(Brooke and Dixie for example). It would seem to me that if they can resurrect some characters that they ought to resurrect Dixie. I really don't know what to make of the soap anymore. I am now just a so-so fan as I don't think the writers and producers care about what the fans like anymore and what we would like to see.

Bring back Leo (AMC)
Okay, I have to say that All My Children has made it this far than it will continue to succeed. However, when I begin to loose interest I stop watching, but when I find out someone is coming back that I have not seen in a long time then I pick back up and start watching again. I think it is about time the writers brought Leo Du pres back, after all Greenlee is back. Her love life has not been the same without him. I do not see the chemistry between Ryan and Greenlee that Leo and her once had. Its was a surprise to me when I heard they were going to bring Greenlee back. Well it is a soap after all, right, so why not bring the love of her life back. Leo, anyone??

I think Ryan should stay with Erica as odd as that sounds. It is true they both have been through a lot and they both understand one another. I could see them falling in love down the road. After all Ryan did fall in love with Greenlee over time, so it could happen with him and Erica.

I'm sure the new writers will have interesting story lines and it will keep viewers interested; especially if they bring Leo back. It will take a lot of brain storming, but they can do it, because they stay true to their viewers. smilies/smiley.gif

I stopped watching AMC because I was disgusted at how they had Bianca raped as an excuse to put her sexuality on mute. Then I was completely offended by the Zarf disaster of a storyline. And then I had no interest in the instacouple of Bianca and Reese. If they want to bring Bianca or another lesbian character back and show the build up and drama and give me a couple to root for, then I will watch. I hope this new head writer has some good ideas. Baby storylines and Ryan weren't enough to keep me interested, sorry, zzz.

The reasonS that I quit watching AMC:
1. Poor Writing
2. Repeating plots, over and over and over..... I wonder when they'll use the one about the woman in the well?
3. It's hard to believe that they are bringing the failed actress Rebecca Buddig back. Another nail in the coffin!

Nobody
I've watched AMC forever, off & on & can never figure out WHY. They seem to get wierder every year. Why do the characters perpetually switch from sickenly saintly to downright evil and back again over & over & over? And then on "holidays" they REPEAT episodes of the sugariest slime. Its so IRRITATING. Like others can't stand Scott, but Marissa is much WORSE. Like the former Annie she's smiley sacchrine. And Ryan....how can anyone stand him?

I hope the cast stays. because that is why I watch it. David is evil. Tad is funny. It is a good way to laugh during the day.

Please dont cancel
I've been watching AMC for about 15 years. Love it!! I really dont care where it is filmed accept I feel bad for the actors who have to make a tough decision. PLEASE DONT CANCEL EVER!!!
BTW: I like the new Colby (love the last one too). Aiden is just annoying now!! Erica really needs a new wardrobe and lay off the younger guys especially one who has been with your daughter!!!
I can not stand the Scott character. He is not cute at all and totally over acts. He is painful to watch!

what is with amc
i have watched amc for over 30 years. love it! however, since you are moving to la here are a few pointers - please change some of the sets. adams house is beyond ugly, please could his living room be more 1970? Scott is awful, same expression for every feeling - ugh!! Enough with these may/december unions it's gross to watch.

I must say, me and my co-workers are very disappointed that AMC is moving to LA. That is only because we realize that every cast member will not be making the move. Colby as already been replaced with a different person. We just hope that whom ever does not go, they will be replaced with a character that is just like them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

I have been a fan of All My children for quite a while. I'm only 12 years old, getting ready to turn 13 in a couple weeks. I watched some of the cast members on The View today-12/11/2009. Just by hearing about the history, and how long All My Children has been in New York, i am going to miiss it, although it'll still come on. [All My children is the show!]

AMC MOVES TO LA
I just watched the cast on "The View".It is so sad they are moving to LA but I support anything to keep AMC alive and well. I have watched AMC for the past 40 years and have literally grown up with these characters, these gifted actors that have become an extended family. Not only among themselves but into many living rooms across the nation. Where the fans are, AMC is a part of us. I continue to watch and I just love all of you. I am happy to see Greenlee coming back. Now you just need to work on Zach (Thorsten Kaye)and make sure he is given an offer he can't refuse to stay with AMC. Susan Lucci, I know that NY is your home and you plan to fly back and forth to home. Just don't ever give up on it. Don't give up on us. We love you. God Bless You All on this move!

I just want to say that I have been into soaps ever since I was a very small child. My grandmother watched all the soaps that are no longer on tv., except for one, General Hospital. I started watching ALL MY CHILDREN from the very first day it aired. I watched everyday with out fail and still do. It would just break my heart to even think that it would be cancelled. This show along with One Life to Live and General Hospital has become such a big part of my life over the years. Some how, these soaps get into your heart and the actors and the role they play become (in a since)a extended part of your family. I can only imagine just hard it is to keep a story line fresh. The writers really do have a hard time I'm sure, but they all do a wonderful job and I will keep watching till the end. If only they could throw in a little more "real life." That is the only thing missing now. If they could remember how AMC came to be such a big hit on daytime tv. in the begining, then the threat of being cancelled would not even come up. Back when AMC was new, the storyline was believable. People (mostly women at that time)could relate to the lives the actors portrayed. It needs to be like that again and with the wonderful writers the show has, I know they could pull it off just fine. These soaps need to get back to the basics with some twists and turns along the way. AMC can do it...I have faith in the writing staff. Bring it back down to earth and make it more real-to-life. Even if you need to bring in more new faces and create a wider storyline. It can be done and I know in my heart the AMC is just the one to make it happen... Thanks for the opportunity to allow me to voice my opinion. ABC, I know you won't let us down....With all my love and respect to all at AMC....Anita J. Heavener

My opinion in regards to the move to LA
I have been watching All My Children for the last thirty years. I absolutely love Zack and wish he was going with the show. I know Kendall is pregnant but I hope she returns. Enough with Erica and Ryan, that is ridiculous. I hope Greenle returns and the Hubbards being back is getting rather boring. I like the Annie them (although it dragged on way too long}. Enjoying the Amadna and Jake drama and hate to see them breakup. Keep on writing good story lines and I will remain a faithful viewer. Would love the opportunity to visit the set once in LA, is that possible? A devoted fan.

Please axe Ryan, not a great actor, full of himself and his character has nothing better to do than cause trouble. I am so upset that Zack isn't going. What a hottie! Kendall will be on maternity leave so she may not decide to go to LA. But I do like her. The Annie/Ryan story line is getting on my nerves. I hope Amanda stays with the show. Greenlee is still alive but I knew that all along.

I have been an AMC fan since the beginning of the show. I have recently been totally loosing interest in every one of the story lines. The Amanda/David thing is beyond stupid. And Adam/Annie -- give me a break, at some point Adam should be getting too old to father any more kids. If we don't believe it -- how could he believe he is going to be a dad? Maybe the move to CA will put some fresh spins on an otherwise very boring show. Don't get me wrong -- I am addicted to it and have not quit watching, but now loosing Zack who knows........

I have watched AMC since it first came out, I think I was in maybe 5th grade. I may have missed a few shows from the days before recording devises, but other than that have not missed many of the daily shows. As a fan of so many years, I am truly hoping that this wonderful ensemble will ALL make the move. I detest nighttime programming but have been a loyal and loving fan of AMC for more years than I can count. The best actors, and they never miss their mark. I cannot think of one person on AMC that I would want to see staying behind. I love them all and want to continue watching this wonderful show for the rest of my years!!! Please fight to keep everyone together. And thank you for the so many years of enjoyment. Keep it all coming!!!

PLEASE RESPECT OUR LOYALTY AND OUR RESPECT FOR THE AMC FAMILY!!!
Have watched for more years than I can count. I've despaired when actors died in both real and reel life. This show has by far better actors than can be found on TV at night. In fact, never, ever watch network shows at night. I am hoping that this wonderful ensemble can come together and come to my city. This is a primo group of actors who are always at their best and never cease to entertain. I know they entice me to return each and every day. Please work hard to keep the cast in ONE PIECE.
I adore the show and it is the only soap I've watched. I welcome them to L.A.!!!

smilies/sad.gif.......but lately, I often ask myself, why? The writing is horrible!!! I am so sick of the same old dialog between Kendall and Zack that I could vomit! EVERYDAY she asks him the same question and he stands there with that stupid look on his face, with no answer.......for what? If you have no good story for them anymore, dump them! Love the Madison Character, but don't see anything very interesting happening there either, boring!!! I agree, Erica, is nearly Social Security eligible....dress her more appropiately....ditch the wonder bras! There are some awesome actors...Tad, Jake, Amanda, Crystal, David, Adam, Annie, JR.....to name a few. Just give them better story lines. AMC needs new writers, maybe they will find them in LA.

Regardless where they move to...Dedicated fan staying watcher!!
because of Bobbie staying on the show that makes the difference for me! I'm excited about the move but feel bad about some of the child actors that will no longer be on because of staying in NYC. I just hope this move is the right thing for the show and that it doesn't make ratings go down too much like it did for GL.

Leave Kendall/take Zach
:Love All My Children...Give Kendall something to do besides complain or leave her in NYC...Glam Erica back up, her wardrobe lately sucks, are you buying from Ross to save money? You have to take Tad...color his hair and keep the comedy he has been doing lately...really enjoy that!!!

so very sad about all my children leaving New York. I have not been happy with the show for about three years now. They have lost all aspects of the original story and the generations before. These characters on now leave me empty. And I love Susan Lucci. But enough with all the story about her. They have made a cartoon character out of her. She dresses like a teenager. And they play her off as a thirty year old for too long.

a 39 year viewer!
A sad day for New York and New Yorkers indeed. Some of the best actors on the show are dyed-in-the-wool New Yorkers. I hope AMC doesn't lose them. I agree with Tricia - how sad that the powers that be may be banking on the notion that "their top paid stars won't follow, thus saving $$ through attrition."

All My Children Relocating to Los Angeles
This is the first time I've ever posted a comment about anything because I frankly don't have time for this nonsense. Today I make an exception because, I do scratch my head and wonder why I'm still watching AMC. I recorded it everday and watched it every evening during 30 years of working full time. Why? Because it was my escape, my "forget about the office politics and stress" and sit and smile, laugh and cry as these characters go through their contortions in life. Now retired, I still do that! Why? Because these characters have sort of become like friends to me. Weird, yes, but true. I understand that times are tough and everyone needs to save a dime, however, AMC executives should be truthful to their cast, crew and viewers -- are they really saving money by moving the entire show to LA where supposedly set costs are cheaper? Or are they banking that their top paid stars won't follow, thus saving $$ through attrition. As they say, when one door closes, another door opens. I wish the best to all the cast and crew, whether they stay or go. If AMC doesn't survive, it's okay -- we will, we all will.

I am so happy to hear of the Los Angeles move for AMC. Been watching since the first day it aired and I was attending college. Sure some of the stories have been lame, but all in all, it is a great show and has terrific actors you can relate to. Anyway, it would just be replaced with some "reality" show and we do not need any more of those. I for one say, "WELCOME TO AMC AND STAFF AND ACTORS IN 2010."

PS What was Boes above trying to say about a 39 year viewer who can't see a reason for there to be a 40th year?? He has been watching for 39 years himself and does not want it to continue?? I did not get his meaning. Boo, if that is what he meant.!!!

Please do not cancel AMC ... EVER! Move it to Timbuktu for all I care - just don't leave lifetime fans that have laughed and cried with this show since they were in preschool (I watched everyday before my nap) hanging! I will personally sell all my worldly possessions and get all Obama in the fundraising efforts to save this show before I stand by and let them cancel it!
