In a casting coup that no one saw coming, three time Daytime Emmy winner Jonathan Jackson is reprising the role of Lucas "Lucky" Lorenzo Spencer, Jr. this fall.
No, you are not reading a Liz & Lucky fan-fic. This is as real as it gets. Daytime Confidential first reported the news of Jackson's return this evening. Not much longer, a now-jobless Greg Vaughan, who currently portrays Lucky Spencer Tweeted "As of today, with sad regrets, I will no longer be a part of what has been a big part of me and my [family's] life. GH and [the powers that be] have [chosen] to take a new direction. I THANK ALL of YOU, for the many memories we've shared and new ones to come!!! ALL MY LOVE, & BIG HUGS to YOU the FANS!!! I LOVE YOU ALL MORE!!!!"
Vaughan joined the show in 2003 as the third actor to portray 6-time Emmy winner Anthony Geary's onscreen son, Lucky, and is the only actor not to have earned himself a Daytime Emmy in the role. In 2006, Vaughan pulled off a gripping drug addiction storyline, for which he was snubbed by his cast and producers for an Emmy pre-nomination in favor of Rick Hearst (ex-Ric Lansing) and newcomer Jason Thompson (Patrick Drake). Since then, Vaughan has been on the backburner serving as Elizabeth's (Rebecca Herbst) safety net and Port Charles' bumbling police detective who just can't catch a break. The actor has been the subject of much fan speculation since earlier in the year it appeared he had been taken off contract with ABC daytime's flagship soap. Speculation ran wild that Jackson may return to his iconic role and Vaughan would be replaced.
ABC's official statement on Vaughan's departure is "Greg Vaughan has decided to vacate the role to explore new opportunities. We thank him for his years engaging our audience and dedication to the show and network. The cast and crew wish him well in all his future endeavors." Soap Opera Source finds it interesting that they chose to state that Vaughan has decided to vacate the role to explore new opportunities. Really, ABC, really? Vaughan was obviously pushed out, just admit it. This is reminiscent of the move GH pulled back in 2003 when they decided to bring back original actor Tyler Christopher to replace Coltin Scott, who then played Nikolas, in the middle of his contract negotiations because Christopher became available again. ABC also had the spin cycle on full force back then, too.
Jackson joined General Hospital in 1993 as the son of supercouple Luke and Laura (Anthony Geary and Genie Francis). Jackson left the show in April 1999 to focus on a film career. The character of Lucky was thought to have died in a fire, but Jackson had pre-taped scenes that had been stretched throughout 1999 in which Lucky was actually seen to be held captive by Cesar Faison (Anders Hove), who was hired by Helena Cassadine (Constance Towers). This was at the height of Jackson and Rebecca Herbst's popularity as young supercouple, Liz and Lucky.
The character of Lucky returned to Port Charles a year later when Jacob Young took over the role as a brainwashed Lucky, with a darker personality. The brainwashing eventually wore off, but the character never really gelled with the brave, strong, compassionate and loyal son of Luke Spencer that Jackson had created. When Vaughan took over the role in 2003, General Hospital had Luke Spencer's son, who had grown up learning cons and fighting the machine, become a police officer. Fans were not pleased. The show continually made Lucky the butt-end of jokes and eventually destroyed the bond that Lucky had with Elizabeth when the two cheated on each other and she got pregnant with another man's child. With Jackson's return, one must wonder how all of this damage will be undone, if it can at all. Will Jackson and Herbst still have the magic?
Upon leaving General Hospital, Jackson appeared in the Michelle Pfeiffer drama, The Deep End of the Ocean. In 2000, Jackson was up for the role of Gabriel in the Mel Gibson headlining action flick The Patriot, but the part was eventually landed by the late Heath Ledger. Jackson was also a favorite to play Anakin Skywalker in the updated Star Wars franchise movies, but the role went to Hayden Christensen. Since then, Jackson appeared in the film Tuck Everlasting and Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights and guest starred on television shows such as Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. In his spare time, Jackson is a guitarist and the lead singer for the band Enation, with his brother Richard Lee Jackson and Michael Galeotti, husband of One Tree Hill's Bethany Joy Galeotti (ex-Michelle Bauer, Guiding Light).
Jackson will return to the GH set on October 1st. Jackson's first airdate is yet unknown, and a final airdate for Vaughan is yet unknown. Lucky, who is currently engaged to Elizabeth for the third time, is unaware that Elizabeth had a one night stand with his brother Nikolas (Tyler Christopher) last month. It'll be interesting to see how this all plays out when Jackson takes over the role. This month, Elizabeth and Nikolas work to keep their tryst a secret from Lucky as Helena returns to Port Charles and hold's Elizabeth's secret over her head.

gh lover, I know I shouldn't laugh at you, but if it's your assertion that Jonathan Jackson can't act and that Greg Vaughan is better than him, especially after Jon blew it up on Monday and Tuesday...bwahahahahahaha! There is a reason GV was fired. When you can bring back the original actor and have him slip back into the role like he never left that's saying A LOT. It's also saying a lot if you can be in a role for nearly seven years and make so little impact that you're easily bumped aside and replaced by a guy who was barely 17 years old the last time he played the character! The fact that GV no longer has a job speaks for itself and the general happiness over JJ's return also speaks for itself.
I get that you miss GV, but I simply couldn't stand for the idea that Jonathan Jackson can't act. You may not LIKE his acting, but the guy brings every day. GV doesn't even have an eighth of his talent.

Lucky Spencer is HOME!!!
I'm still loving having Jonathan back! With each scene he reaffirms why no one else can fill Lucky Spencer's shoes except him. He wears the character like a second skin. Jonathan doesn't just play Lucky Spencer. He IS Lucky Spencer in every sense of being. I am so glad he returned and I'm even happier to love Lucky Spencer once again!

I am so psyched that G.H. finally had the good sense to bring back Jonathan Jackson. He is THE ONLY person who can play Lucky. Sorry, but Greg just didn't fit the profile. He never looked the part and had zero chemistry with Elizabeth.

So thrilled
Okay, so I have not been watching GH religiously over the past decade, as I did during the one before. I was a diehard until JJ left in 99. I stuck by the show for about another year but life got involved and without the real Lucky and Liz, I got annoyed and stopped watching. I check in on PC every so often and watched last night to catch another fav, James Franco, in his role. I almost had heart failure when I saw LUCKY back. It was too late to call anyone so I did this morning. I will def be back into watching GH now.
I also love GV and think he is gorgeous. I thought he did a much better job in the role than Lucky #2. But JJ will always be Lucky, no matter how long he was gone for. I hope GV goes on to great things and can't wait to see his new endeavour.

well i can certainly see by all the comments who the fan favorite is....jonathan jackson hands down. I,too think jonathan, as the one and only lucky should reprise the role. Seriously, no one can fill his shoes. They have tried and obviously GH along with all of his fans agree. Why else would GH bring JJ back at the drop of a hat. They know what he's about: Three emmys, fan favorite, outstanding actor...theres your reason. I know GH tried everything to keep him from leaving, but he was so talented they HAD to let him go and explore new opportunities and new challenges. Actors do that all the time. He did his thing for 10 years, now he has a family and prob wants to return to a stable and secure job in this economy for his kids. Plus he said that Lucky's character has a strength and it challenges him to play this character. So good for him.
I stopped watching years ago when he left and have started watching again, because i enjoyed watching jj. He is an outstanding actor. Ive watched him since he left in alot of his movies and i really enjoyed him the most as lucky spencer. I never thought he would return because he has so many other talents. I truly think he missed his gh family.
And lets get one thing straight people, he is NOT a teenie bopper, he may look younger but come on, he is 27 years old, is married and has 3 kids. I think that disqualifies him as a teenie bopper. If i hear one more person refer to him like that, i will scream. JJ has always been more mature than your average kid when he WAS a kid. So please stop referring to him as such.

You can imagine how the JJ lovers felt when he left but its been 10 years and FINALLY the real Lucky is back and I couldnt be happier. Greg Vaughn is a good actor...i loved him on the Young and the Restless.....he's just not Lucky Spencer. No one is except jonathan.

GH- I'm BACK!!!
Finally, finally, I have a reason to watch GH again. Someone said Greg wasn't great when he started, but he got better, and I completly agree... but he's still no Jonathan Jackson. The chemistry Jackson and Herbst had in the 90s was incredible, neither Greg or Jacob were able to duplicate or do better. I feel bad for Greg, but there's only one Lucky and he's back now. As for the writer who said GH didn't learn from the Sarah Brown return, that didn't fail because they brought her back, its because of the character they wrote for her. Claudia= failure, not Sarah

Bring Greg back!
Jonathan Jackson may be back but he is definitely NOT the actor Greg Vaughn is. Greg is far far the better policeman than Jonathan as Lucky Spencer is. If you want the teenie bopper type actor playing a police officer then Jonathan may be the right fit but Greg is still the best. I find it appauling that GH would do this to Greg. Thats whats wrong with America, people can't leave well enough alone. Greg should sue and I have made up my mind. GH will no longer be a part of my afternoon line up. This is just not the right thing to do. Your ratings will fall...watch and see!

I am so excited that Jonathan Jackson is back! I have been absolutely in love with him since I was 12 years old! Hopefully him and Elizabeth can work it out because they used to be adorable!

YESSSS, finally. At last.
Now it will make sense that Elizabeth loves him. 
They had the sweetest romance and I'm not sure if the greg vaughn supporters had ever seen Jackson in the role; because if they did, you'd absolutely understand why it's been horrible to watch his reprisal of that role. Lucky Spencer had the heart and soul of a poet and artist, to see him turned into this ill-fated, bumbling, non-intuitive guy has been insanity.
I think Greg Vaughn would be great in some other role on the show. He should have something similar to the evil Rick Lansing role. It's good to see a non-hero be a bumbling, always wrong jerk. Or he could be Nikolas' lover, those two really had a weird chemistry together.
I want Vanessa back and to see Jax finally happy again. He's never seemed happy since his little fun pack left the show. He can't really pick Carly up and carry her around.

Am I the only one NOT excited to have Jonathan Jackson back? Has GH learned nothing from Claudia? You can not recreate the magic (and I loved Sarah Brown when she was Carly). Jonathan Jackson was NOT a good actor. He won emmys as a kid because, lets face it, kids are not good actors. I have seen nothing in his work since leaving GH to indicate he has improved in that department. It looks like more scenes I will be fast forwarding through. Fun times.

I had not heard this news until this morning when I was watching my taped soaps and saw the preview for GH. I just said "OMG"!! Unless you watched GH back in the 90's, you cannot appreciate what this means. Jonathan's portrayal of Lucky was iconic. I cannot wait to see how he interacts with Luke, Nicholas, Elizabeth and Lulu. You guys that didn't see his portrayal are in for a treat. I truly do not wish to say anything bad about Greg Vaughn or Jacob Young because in the roles that suit them, they could be great.(or, in Jacob's case with JR "are" great). This is Jonathan's part. Just like Luke, Laura, Mac and Robin...some parts cannot be recast. It just won't work. We are thrilled, GH. Best wishes Greg, we look forward to seeing you in the part that you are able to make yours.

SO EXCITED
I am truly excited for JJ's return! Lucky was by far my favorite character, when JY took over the role I became apathetic. I stopped watching GH for a bit but returned when Kimberly came back as Robin, but did not care for GV's portrayal at all (no offense to GV, he just never played Lucky how I remembered him to be). I do feel bad for the situation, but cannot describe how ecstatic I am. I loved JJ's chemistry with TG. I think JJ's lucky can even salvage my liking of the character Elizabeth.

I will come back when Jonathan Jackson does!!
I named my son Lucky after Jonathan Jacksons Lucky...they changed the actor 2 week before my boy was born, I was heart broke. I tried to keep watching the show, but was sickened but what they were doing to Lucky. I hope those writers are gone and the new ones are able to bring back the smart Lucky that could survive in a train car at the age of 12. Then maybe we can all forget the idiot that he has been made into!! Now That Jackson is an adult, I am hopeful that they can rekindle the heat between him and Rebecca. If the writers do this right, they could bring back many of us viewers that left when Lucky did!!! There will only ever be one Lucky Spencer....Welcome Back Jonathan...You've been missed

Okay, now I am confused! Why change Lucky? Although, I did kind of think that he seemed too old to be Laura and Luke's son, I thought that Greg V. has done a fine job in portraying him as the writers have written him. Not sure about the "original" Lucky, was not watching it at the time he was on. Bitter sweet...
I've watch GH off and on since I was a little baby with my mom, I'm now 29 and my mom passed away this year. I remember when Lucky died... I cried and cried, I still remember the last time you saw the real Lucky... screaming under the door. It is so great, but yet so bitter sweet that he is back, I'm so excited, but so sad that my Mom can't share it with me. Thank you for bringing him back, it has brought back such great memories.

Why?
I like Greg as Lucky.. I'm very sad to see him leaving. I must have been living in the closet cuz I didn't hear this until today and Jonathan comes back next week.. VERY VERY SAD to see Greg go. He wasn't great at first but in the past year he's become a great part of GH! I'll miss him for sure!

I'm So Happy That Jackson Is Back !!!!!! Yeah !!!!!!
I am very excited to see that Jackson is back I was so upset when che left the show I always thought that he was the better Lucky no offence to the others that played Luck but I started watching GH when I was in the 4th grade I would rush home to watch it I would even tell my friends that I couldnt come out because GH was on I would come out after the show was over I really started to watch the show because I really liked the guy who played Lucky in the show I thought he was just to dam cute and I was very sad to see him go When I seen the preview that Jackson is coming back to GH I litterly jumped up and down with joy I can't wait to see him return to GH I had to go run and tell my dad that the orinigal Lucky is back and the funny thing is I don't know how I got my dad into watching GH with me but we watch the show everyday

I will never forget the day Jackson appeared on GH. I was 8 years old and home sick from school and my mom made me watch her soaps with her. That was the first day I became hooked on GH. I would beg my mom to record it for me so I could watch it after school and when something exciting was happening I would sometimes fake sick just to watch. I cried for days when the took Jackson off the show. I have been waiting for this day to come for a long time. Even though Vaughan is a talented actor I am truely pleased "Lucky" has finally come home~

Thrilled!
I've watched GH since I was a teenager (I'm 39 now) and there are always a few actors you're really sad to see go. Jonathan Jackson was one of those prized actors and I'm thrilled to see him coming back to the show. YAY!

i agree with Laur09, no other actor has did it for me either...one lucky and JJ is it! he was loveable as 12 year old lucky when he 1st walked into kelly's and he was awesome as grown lucky, i was soooooo sad when he left and was kidnapped. i loved it when he and the orignal emily had scenes together, yes...both very young but they were so cute...remember the nurses ball? i think jj will play an awesome cop lucky but maybe somewhat of a rouge cop?? ethan takes so much after luke, maybe lucky will follow more in his footsteps now. he always took more after laura i thought. i wish that they would somehow make jake lucky's and not jason although i absolutley love love love jason and the scenes he is getting lately just crack me up, especially the cop/hooker scene. and with maxie and spinneli, did u c his face?? he was almost cracking up, how does he keep a straigh face, i wonder how many takes for that scene. and i'm sooooo sad to see olivia go, i'm a sarah brown fan, loved her as carly and she's just great with sonny. i hoped that after her miscarraige they could have given her a softer heart but i guess because of her exit, no way. dante.....omg, he's just awsome, i love him! what will lucky think when he finds out his sister is dating a mobsters son?? o wait...he's a cop 2, lol!! i think dante will join sonny in the end, no way will he take out his own father. still can't for for jj's return the 27th, u can bet my dvr will be set, no waiting around for sunday replays, lol check out his bands tunes btw, awesome group, wish they would get some air time, they rock! jj has a powerful voice, i'm sure we will hear him at jakes, lol btw...macho man was just too much, lol enough rambling..tootles

I am SO EXCITED!!! JJ was my absolute favorite when he was Lucky, and no one since has done it for me. It's a shame the way the writers have destroyed the character of Lucky, but hopefully with JJ back they'll write for Lucky like they used to... I'd often watch the last two Lucky's and try to imagine JJ in those scenes, but never could since the heart of the character was so different from when JJ played him. Now that they have JJ back, hopefully Lucky will be Lucky again and not "Cop Lucky" which is totally opposite of everything JJ's amazing acting had had brought to the character from the time he was about 12 years old. Nikolas and Liz together annoy me, and I LOVE Jason and Sam, so JJ's Lucky back with Liz is a GH dream come true for me! CAN'T WAIT!!

i to am so excited that JJ is coming back to the show. i was so sad to see him leave and although i love jacob young on AMC, he just wasn't lucky. i also ador greg vaugh, he played on charmed as well, but the original lucky!! OMG! i hear his first air date is set for oct. 27th and i don't know how the liz/lucky/nick triangle is gonna play out but i know we will have liz and lucky back!! i saw most of his stuff, deep end of the ocean, puple haze, his guest spots on the sarah connor chronicles and he was awesome. i've also heard his music and he rocks! i sure hope the does kareoke at jakes since thats becoming so popular!! remember that song he wrote for elizabeth way back in the day?? i'm just so excited...forgive my rambling....can't wait till oct 27th!!

Stupid decision! It's no wonder the show is f**ked up. They keep hiring and firing the wrong people. Jonathan Jackson left because he thought he was too good for the show. After realizing he gave up the best job he's ever had, they just fire Greg Vaughn after 6 years of loyal service? Greg is a better actor and much hotter than little Johnny Boy! And I still can't get over how the bosses at GH have wiped out the Quartermaine family!

I am GH fan and it was so sad when Jonathan Jackson left, when Lucky "died" came back as someone else Jacob Young who is now on AMC. And even though Greg Vaughan is a hottie JJ was my first daytime crush!

I hope the writers pull this off, b/c even with JJ, the writers can screw it up, they have everything else these past few years. I want REAL LOVE STORY, I want ELIZABETH AND LUCKY!

This made my DAY! I haven't watched GH in years, but after hearing Jackson was coming back, I'm 100 percent watching again. Now I'm just curiosu to see how the writers face the gigantic task of restoring Lucky as a character, and the Lucky/Liz relationship, after 10 years of rubbish writing. The only actor who could really pull this off, though, is Jackson, so I have faith in his ability to make the character as wonderful as he used to be.

I would take anything the writers dished out if they fixed the mess they have made out of the elizabeth and lucky relationship. I fell in love with those two when I was in highschool, I'm a huge Becky fan, and would love to see her get this with Jonathan. They would ignite the screen now as adults, they are both so talented, and I can't imagine the chemistry is gone. I've beenw atching old clips of them for two days now! So excited!

I can't remember the last time I was this excited about anything GH. I have tuned out for a little over two years now. They have destroyed that soap. No offense to any fans, but the same 5-6 people constantly is NOT what I want to see. I hope Genie comes next and we have the spencers and the cassadine's back to full glory, along with the Q's. I'm so giddy over the idea of Becky and Jonathan as Lucky and Elizabeth again. I don't want to see those eyes look at elizaeth with disgust or hate. I would love LnL2 back with JJ. I might be silly, but they are the reason I started watching in the first place!

Maybe they will bring back the real lucky the young man that was a con and heart of his father they changed him completly maybe he has been held by the cassadines all these years like laura was so he will come back as himself with a revenge against the cassadines with his sister lulu and brother ethan like laura and luke did sense it is still hate there.family against family thats what liz liked about the young lucky he took action.

This just made my day. Jackson has always been Lucky. No disrespect to the other actors but they just did not capture the essence of the character's maturity (even though they were older) established when Jackson was Lucky. I'll be interested to see how the writers pull this off since they have essentially turned Lucky into a clueless jerk, which he never was when Jackson played him. There is so much negative baggage. Now if they would just ditch the angry teen (Michael and Christina) whining story lines I would be even more thrilled. Every time those kids are on the screen it makes me cringe.

"Lucky " he is back
I have watched GH since long before Luke and Laura, and I am sad they dissed GV but he brought nothing to the character built by JJ. I loved him on Charmed as dan but as Lucky, no. No wonder Liz hopped on the Nik boat. maybe with JJ back Liz might actually be worth watching again. Good luck GV and thrilled JJ is coming back, it's funny but Ethan and Lucky actually look more like brothers!!

I am thrilled by this news! As someone who loved Lucky when Jonathan played him, I was disgusted at how GH destroyed his character when that horrible Jacob Young played him. Greg Vaughn wasn't as terrible as Jacob, but I'm sorry he lacks depth to play the role which is why Lucky has continued to suck and be dumb when he took over the role. I feel sorry for Greg and his fans but this happens to everyone. I do however resent the snarky tone of this article. It is so totally biased toward Greg and there is a resentful tone toward Jonathan coming back.

Johnathan Jackson is Lucky Spencer and I can't wait for his return to General Hospital. I wish Greg Vaughn all the luck in the world but he won't need it because he is one of the best and will have another role before one can say Lucky Who. This news is almost as good as if it were about Vanessa Marcel now that would give me a heart attack.

GH is finally getting it right First Jasam together again now this, GH is going to be unstoppable,. I cannot wait to see Jonathan Jackson again. As far as Jonathan being overrated Emmy talk 3 Emmys come he is overrated with just cause. Haters get back General Hospital is the best.
