Chris Engen Leaves Y&R

Y&R star Chris Engen who plays Adam Wilson, has apparently quit the show over a heavy duty storyline that involved his character kissing another male. The unexpected move has angered many fans and left the brasses hurrying to find a recast.

Engen has been called every name in the book, since the news has been released, and he finally broke his silence.

"I would like first to apologize, as I feel I owe a great many of you at least that. I know that a choice like this appears weak and impulsive. Honestly, it was the last thing I ever thought I'd do - the absolute LAST thing I ever wanted," Engen wrote on his blog.

The Young and the Restless is reportedly brewing an intimate relationship between Rafe (Yani Gellman) and Adam, and Chris Engen just wouldn't have it.

"I want to apologize to any of my fellow actors who I may have disappointed," Engen wrote. "I would also like to apologize to those of you who feel slighted by this choice, as I have been branded a 'homophobe' by several members of the press. This is, of course, absurd and many of my dearest friends are homosexuals who would be more than happy to speak on my behalf. My decision had nothing to do with religion, or anything I learned at Bishop Montgomery High School."

"True -- I was not comfortable with many of the challenges they presented before me, but I put my head down and did my job," he added. "I never stormed off the set, nor have I stormed off any set in my 18 years of struggle as an artist. I felt generally unhappy about my contribution to the show, and had greater and greater difficulty making any sense of the challenges they were asking me to face...I believe that as an actor, and as a human being, I deserve better than to be forced to do something that I don't feel is right on many levels, and that should have nothing to do with the choices that other people make. My visage and my craft were being utilized to tell a story that I wasn't inspired to tell."

In spite of everything, Engen has nothing but kind words for his co-actors, as well as the writers and produces on The Young and the Restless.

Engen originated the adult role of Adam, the son of Victor (Eric Braeden) and the deceased Hope Wilson, and first appeared on The Young and the Restless on February 12, 2008.

Hello Chris,

I thought you were great playing Adam Wilson on Y&R. You're one hell of an actor and I loved tuning in at nights to see what Adam (chris Engen) was up to. You are one of the best actors that Y&R has ever seen and they should feel real lucky they had you as long as they did. I think your statement to the public was beautifully written and I can't wait to see what you will do next. Because I will be tuning in. I was always told growing up to tell it like it is. And I think you did just that. You did it in a very non confrontational way. You left for reasons that are your own. No one really knows what Y&R may have said to you one on one. The public doesn't know what really goes on behind the scenes. No pun intended...I think the people that issued a very nasty and negative response to your message should look at themselves in the mirror. I have learned from experience that the loudest talker usually don't know shit about what they are talking about. And people that are leaving you nasty messages can get off of their high horses and realize they are not holier than thou. Too many people think they are and their arrogance is their downfall. Again, I thought you were terrific on the show and I'll be watching for you! Bravosmilies/smiley.gif

GOOD FOR YOU CHRIS!
It is truly refreshing to see someone stand up for what they believe. That doesn't mean he doesn't support his gay friends, but that for him it was just something he could not live with. He is more of a man than most! When he can stand up and walk away from the money and fame that Y&R brougt to him...well, that's the kind of man that we need today in some of our public offices and TV. When it is all said and done, it is no one's business why he walked!!! He is the one that will have to stand in front of the mirror each day and ask himself did I do what is in my heart, and what is right for me. I think Chris will be able to look in that mirror and say, "All is well with my soul." Hold your head up high Chris, you have done nothing wrong!!!.
I think gays want so much to be excepted they forget we have a choice just like they do. You go Chris, and much luck to you in your future...whatever that takes you. Vera, North Carolina

men kissing men on Y&R
Bring it on! As a long time fan of Y&R, I think it's high time there was a gay storyline. On the other hand, it looks like Adam is faking his feelings for Rafe and it would be ridiculous for Rafe to not see through this. Engen is right that Adam is a poorly written character - if he's leaving for that reason, good for him. If he's afraid of a same-sex kiss, well, please grow up.

To the writers of Y&R, please - I'm sure Genoa City has some gay residents - don't keep them invisible.

I can't blame him either
Fans don't want any homosexual relationships and activity on Y and R. Who thought that junk up as if there is not enough to keep up with on Y and R? We have to support Engen. When men are kissing men on Y and R then it is time to turn CBS off and clean the house instead.

I can't say I blame him
I mean, if you feel uncomfortable doing something as an actor, you have to move aside and let someone else who doesn't feel uncomfortable do the job. It is his responsibility to do that for the show's sake. If I was an actor and they expected me to do a lot of athletic things like jump out of a plane or something, I couldn't do it. It doesn't mean that I'm prejudiced against planes or skydivers are bad.
