Eric Braeden Ends Contract Talks 'Y&R'

Eric Braeden who has portrayed Victor Newman on CBS's number one rated soap opera, The Young and the Restless since 1980 has halted all contract negotiations with parent company, Sony. Last month, it was reported that Braeden would be written off the series due to a breakdown in contract talks.

According to a recent interview with EW.com, the long time Y&R veteran spoke out about his experience with re-negotiating his contract, "We reached an impasse in the negotiations. I have shown flexibility, they have shown none. It is over. I pulled the plug. That's it. No more. If I show good will, I expect it to be reciprocated. If there is a rigid attitude on the other side, what is there to to negotiate? That's a sign of utter disrespect. I will not negotiate with people who remain aloof and arrogant about the whole thing. Not after 30 years, I won't do that."

Even though Braeden has been dealing with the lack of respect from Sony, he continues to have respect and love for his fellow cast mates, along with head writer, Maria Bell. "I'm saying this with a great amount of sadness because I've had nothing but respect for my fellow cast members, I have deep respect for the crew who has done an extraordinary job year in and year out, and I have enormous respect for (head writer) Maria Bell."

When failing negotiations had come to light, many thought it was going to be a repeat performance like what had happened with Braeden's co-star, Melody Thomas Scott. She too had reached a stalemate when negotiating a new contract, and had been written off the show before her counteroffer was accepted and she returned to her role as Nikki Newman, Victor's ex-wife and mother of his children, Nicholas (Joshua Morrow) and Victoria (Amelia Heinle).

Some may remember, this isn't the first time Eric Braeden has taken a pay cut, it was two years ago, when he was the first cast member who offered to take a cut in pay. While many soaps are feeling the crunch in the past year, Y&R cannot demand what they used to from CBS, so Sony decided to cut production costs to lower their budget. Sony, however is still making money by selling it's reruns overseas and to SOAPnet and it continues to be the number one watched soap opera in the US.

Braeden says he's exploring other opportunities, but he is sad to be leaving the show he has called home for the past 29 years, "It's slowly sinking in (that I'm leaving), it's sad." The actor will last as air as Victor Newman on November 2.

FAN RESPONSE: What do you think about the issues between Eric Braeden and The Young & the Restless/Sony? Do you feel Braeden is overreacting? Or do you feel the show should honor the deal already in place? Where you do stand on the issue? Can Y&R survive the exit of one of its biggest stars? Eric what ever you decide I am with you all the way. I am very sad that you won't be on anymore. If you get new writers so the show isn't so boring I might start watching it again

Keep the Mustache - Don't Let Eric Braden Go!!!!!!
I have been watching Young & the Restless for 25 years and I think Sony would be making the biggest mistake in their life letting this one and only icon let go because of money. If anything, he should get a big raise!!!!

Its all about dollars and cents as far as Sony is concerned. What's wrong with honoring Eric's current contract. Sony like most money makers care nothing about viewers. No viewers no ratings no show. Keeping Eric would cut into their pockets, that's why they are giving him the shaft. So many company's are downsizing employees by getting rid of those who have been faithful for years and have made them what they are today. It looks like Sony is no different. Eric has definitely made the show for the last 30 years. Sony obviously has no respect for their employees. The rest of the cast better look out. Who will be next. There is no Nikki without Victor.

There is no Y& R w/o Victor Newman's character. Eric Braeden is the only Victor Newman. Jack Abbott needs and arch enemy and the only match is Victor Newman.

You will throw off the entire balance of the show. I been really geting tired of he Adam Newman character, but the Newmans keep me watching. I think that will be the end of my Saop watching. I stopped watching OLTL after so many cast changes.

I have to say, how after 29 years on this soap in a very crucial character do Y and R think the fans will just lay down and take it? Don't they know if you lose the fans you lose the ratings, you lose money and you may lose the show. Katherine, Victor, Nikki, Jack these are ALL VERY important characters. Time has shown you can replace the Jacks, the Ashleys, the Jills but Katherine, Nikki and Victor I don't think so. They would have to die in real life before someone else is accepted into these parts. If you don't know you will soon find out CBS. Fans do count. I am not seeing what the harm is in finishing out a contract YOU negotiated anyway. Pay cut isn't the issue, you want to force it on him NOW and not at the end of his contract. We get it, you put a clause in it and it's legal, but ask yourself is it worth it?

It's always sad when an actor leaves a show that he has dedicated his life to for so long. But Y&R has a great cast with Peter Bergman (Jack Abbott, his younger brother Billy,Kevin , his older brother Michael and Doug Davidson (Paul Williams) ALSO there is Neil young. Y&R has the best male actors on soaps IMO.

I have watched this show from DAY 1, and cannot believe that Sony would do something like this to one of the shows icons. There is NO OTHER actor that can take his place. I will cancel my DVR to stop recording.

I've only been watching since 1991, but I too am going to boycott the show. No disrespect intended for the other actors and the writers. Eventually we were going to have to say goodbye to the Victor Newman character, but for Sony to do it this way and basically shaft Eric and the fans of the show is totally wrong. My wife and I will watch CSI reruns or something. Shame on Sony for their disrespect to a dedicated actor that has helped keep the show at #1. You reap what you sow. After Nov. 2, this fan is being written off as well.
