'Restless' Recast: Darius McCrary Is The New Malcolm

Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Family Matters alum Darius McCrary, a.k.a. Eddie Winslow, has been cast as Malcolm Winters on Y&R.

In September, we reported that The Young and the Restless was looking to recast Malcolm.  The show put out a casting call for the role made famous by Daytime Emmy winner Shemar Moore, who originated the role in 1994. The role was said to debut on the airwaves in November, but the role hadn’t been cast in time.  Moore, one of few daytime actors to successfully make the transition from daytime television to primetime and movies, exited the show in 2002.  He returned in 2004 and remained with The Young and the Restless for a year, when he left the show to star on CBS' hit crime drama, Criminal Minds.  In 2007, Moore was quoted as saying, "My time is done on Y&R. I did eight solid years as Malcolm."
McCrary has signed a multiyear deal according to EW.  McCrary will reunite with former Family Matters costar Bryton James (Devon), who played the role of Ritchie on Family Matters.

After Family Matters ended its run in 1998, McCrary appeared in the short-lived UPN series Freedom.  He went on to appear in Girlfriends, Dr. Vegas, Committed, Eve and Cold Case. He also voices the role of Jazz 2007 blockbuster film, Transformers.

"We are thrilled to have the character of Malcolm back on Y&R," co-executive producer and head writer Maria Arena Bell tells EW. "Malcolm, Neil Winters’ brother, has always been a catalyst to exciting stories. He’s coming back to town to see his brother and to reunite with his biological daughter, Lily Winters, as she fights for her life. Malcolm is a photographer … someone who lives on the edge and who always pushes the envelope."

McCrary began taping on November 18. He will first air on December 29th.

The New Malcolm
I'm sorry but this is the biggest Y&R mistake of all times.
My 14 year grandson would have been a better choice.
I was not fan of Eddie Winslow and now Malcolm Winters has been reduced to a joke.

...
I admit that I'm not a big fan of D. McCrary. BUT, why can't they expect us to believe he's Lily's father? Skin tone too dark? I mean, Adam grew six inches in his late 20s/early 30s....

BAD CASTING!!!
This is BAD casting at its worst!!! The gross consensus of Y&R fans expressed on MULTIPLE message boards contend that Darius McCrary is wrong for this role. These observations come from years of experience as soap viewers. We know what we like and what we do not...Darius in this role we don't...He should have be cast as another character. The Malcolm that we know is gorgeous, sexy and edgy......Casting involves more than acting....However, Shemar Moore was all these things and a great actor...There is NO WAY that Y&R can expect us to believe that Darius can be Lily's father. Victoria Rowell and Shemar Moore played their roles just that well...they are unforgetable. There are soooooo many more Black actors that would have been better cast as Malcolml

Why Not
Lets be fair you are talking about a character that was originated by Shemar Moore who was a new talent and it was ok. Now that a seasoned actor is taking his place and you say WHY because he is a Hell of a actor he has more experience than Shemar and if Shemar satisfied you then you best believe so will Darius Get over it and Get use to it. Stop nick picking at everything that this soap is trying to do. I don't agree with a lot of their ideas but it is a soap. Everyone wants Nick and Sharon back together me I think it will be the worst thing for Nick. Sharon is so needy and she pulls him down Phyllis brings him up. No matter how sneaky she can be she is a plus for him. Sharon is no Angel or Victim People, but I have learned to live with the fact that Sharon and Nick will be back together because I know neither one can keep their pants on and they will be broken back up in no time. Sometimes your so called soul mate is your worst mate. So I have gotton over it.smilies/cheesy.gif
